Part-time Assistant Solicitor-General | Cobb County (03/01/24)

The Cobb County Solicitor-General's office is seeking a qualified individual for the position of part-time assistant solicitor general. This part-time role involves prosecuting cases in the Magistrate Court Ordinance calendar and Juvenile Court traffic arraignment calendar. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing non-jury ordinance cases for trial, managing associated trial proceedings, and ensuring compliance with state laws, court procedures and rules of evidence.

Job Responsibilities: 

  • Attend weekly Magistrate Court Ordinance calendar and prosecute cases as appropriate.

The Georgia Department of Revenue seeks to fill an attorney 4—managing attorney position within the Office of the General Counsel’s External Operations Section.  

Reporting to the deputy general counsel, you will be responsible for managing a team of attorneys and/or legal analysts dedicated to providing in-house legal counsel to the department’s motor vehicles division, the alcohol and tobacco division, and the local government services division.

Assistant District Attorney | Rome Judicial Circuit  (03/31/24) 

Location: Rome, GA
Salary: $58,250-$119,786, additional county supplement

Job Description: 
The Rome Judicial Circuit is seeking applications for a state paid assistant district attorney. Further, to evaluate criminal cases that come into the office and to represent the state in the resolution of the case via dismissal, plea negotiations, trial and appeals. Must work well with others. The following duties are normal for this position; other duties may be required and assigned:

  • Drafts accusations and indictments; evaluates and researches potential defenses; dismisses cases not prosecutable. 
  • Reads cases submitted by investigators; reads police reports; determines whether further investigation is needed; approves or returns cases for more work; researches alternative crimes; reads and researches case law. 
  • Determines appropriate sentence recommendations; attends arraignment calendars; attends pre-trial conferences with judge and defense attorneys. 
  • Subpoenas appropriate witnesses for motions; researches and argues all pretrial and post-trial motions; files motions in appropriate time frame prior to trial. 
  • Complies with discovery requirements by copying and mailing documents. 
  • Works with trial team investigators and other ADAs to coordinate witnesses and evidence for trials; gathers and labels evidence. 
  • Negotiates pleas to dispose of cases. 
  • Interviews witnesses, victims, experts and the police; questions potential jurors and selects jury.
  • Develops trial strategy for each case; organizes opening and closing arguments; presents evidence at trial; consults with supervisors about trial strategy. 
  • Reads appellate briefs and case transcripts; researches and writes responses to briefs. 
  • Represents state in probation revocation hearings; responds to parole notices. 
  • Handles telephone calls from attorneys, witnesses and concerned citizens. 
  • Determines appropriate bond amounts. Attends meetings; maintains continuing education requirements.


Minimum Qualifications:

The office is looking for candidates with a background in litigation. All applicants must be a member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia, and be admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Georgia and Court of Appeals of Georgia or be in good standing with another state’s bar association and eligible for reciprocal admission to the State Bar of Georgia. A criminal background check is completed on all candidates. Employment is contingent upon the completion and satisfactory results of the background investigation, a motor vehicle driver’s history check, a valid driver’s license, no impediment to being an insured driver and applicants for hire will be subject to fingerprinting and drug screening. Senior Staff Attorney, Appointed | Superior Court of Fulton County 

Location: Atlanta

The Superior Court of Fulton County Georgia (court) has an exciting opportunity for an experienced senior staff attorney, appointed, in office of the judge's chambers. This job will be an “in person” position.

Superior court is Georgia's busiest trial court of general jurisdiction. The court seeks to provide a forum in which legal disputes between citizens can be resolved in a fair and efficient process with attention to equal access, impartiality, efficiency and safety. After joining the court, you will become part of a fast-paced team dedicated to providing the citizens of Fulton County with the service they deserve.

Job Summary:

The senior staff attorney, appointed, is a career-track court professional, conducts legal research, drafts court orders and memoranda, advises the judge on legal issues as required. This position functions as part of a cross-trained team responsible for litigation processing and docket management. This position is appointed by an elected official to serve in a “highly intimate and sensitive position of responsibility,” under the direct supervision of the elected official.

Essential Duties:

  • The staff attorney performs legal research and drafts proposed orders for an assigned judge. Provides legal advice and opinions to judges and court staff. Prepares legal summaries of facts and arguments for cases brought before the court.
  • Drafts legal memoranda, proposed orders and jury charges on court cases and specific points of law as required by the assigned judge. Reviews legal opinions and various legal publications for research purposes.
  • Stays current on relevant laws, regulations, and court processes and procedures. Provides legal analysis of appellate opinions, motions, jury charges and court documents, and monitors for compliance with established court rules and procedures.
  • Applies training and experience to caseload to identify and ensure emergency issues are addressed in a timely and appropriate manner. Supervises other court personnel within chambers at the discretion of the assigned judge.
  • Provides information, guidance and direction to attorneys, patrons of the court, other court employees and other agency representatives regarding applicable case management policies and procedures. Provides information to attorneys and other concerned parties regarding cases on court calendar.
  • Trial judges responsible for litigation processing and docket management are supported by a three person team of court professionals. Team members provide lead direction and guidance to lawyers and litigants navigating the litigation process before the judge. The team functions collaboratively to facilitate orderly case management and court proceedings, including analyzing and prioritizing the flow of work relating to all case types comprising a judicial caseload.
  • Areas of primary responsibility are divided among team members as determined by the judge. As part of the litigation and docket management support unit, the staff attorney may assist in case flow and litigation process management, including scheduling, caseload progression analysis, development, and implementation of strategies and procedures for management of the docket from case filing to disposition across case types or with respect to specific aspects of the litigation process such as motions practice.

Permanent Law Clerk—Justice LaGrua | Supreme Court of Georgia

Duties:
Each Justice has two law clerks and one term clerk who assist the Justice with drafting memoranda, bench briefs and opinions; reviewing opinions and memoranda circulated by other Justices and the Court’s central staff; conducting legal research; preparing for oral argument; supervising law school interns; and such other work as is required.

Requirements and Preferences: 
O.C.G.A. § 15-2-19 requires Supreme Court staff attorneys to be admitted to the State Bar of Georgia within one year of employment. Other minimum requirements include graduation from an accredited law school with strong academic credentials, demonstrated writing and analytical abilities, great integrity and character, and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Prior experience as a judicial law clerk is preferred.

Purpose of Classification:
The purpose of this classification is to review, investigate, prosecute or defend, and resolve criminal cases on behalf of the county or state of Georgia in an assigned legal office or county department; perform beginning level professional legal work; and may assist in cases of routine complexity.

Essential Functions:

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate Degree required.

Senior Attorney IV (Municipal Governance) | City of Atlanta

Job Description:

The attorney position will serve as a legal resource in the municipal governance team in the city’s Law Department, providing legal advice and counsel to various city department clients. The lawyers of the Municipal Governance Team (MGT) support various city departments and offices, including finance department, department of grants and community development, public safety departments (police, fire/rescue, corrections, code enforcement), mayor’s office, city council and others. In this position the attorney may work on a variety of transactions e.g., commercial finance transactions, including bonds, commercial paper and master lease transactions and other intergovernmental agreements, memorandums of understandings, as well as related legislative and regulatory matters and/or may also work providing advice, counsel and drafting support to the public safety departments. A key aspect of this role is the ability to apply legal advice effectively to the issues presented by clients. The role will be expected to have transactional law background, strong research and contract drafting skills. Prior litigation experience would also be preferred. This position will require the attorney to act as a resource to review, negotiate, revise and draft a variety of city contracts, generally in the form of memoranda of understanding and intergovernmental agreements, and will be responsible to draft, review and edit legislation when needed.

Key to success in this role is the ability to act in a professional and responsive manner on all matters, including at a minimum, taking the time to listen and understand clients’ needs and the complexities of the situation to ensure that legal advice, counseling and written communications are aligned with city processes, city of Atlanta municipal code and other applicable laws. The role may be required to supervise and manage outside counsel on the certain city department related matters. The lawyers of the municipal government team often collaborate with other members of the city’s Department of Law who represent other clients or subject matter areas.

The deputy division chief is responsible to manage all legal aspects of the city’s procurement-to-contract process. Duties include supervising a team of attorneys grouped to support the development of the city’s contractual relationships through to contract execution.

Job Summary:
Duties of an attorney in this section include, but are not limited to: defending state agencies, public colleges and universities and state officers/employees in employment discrimination lawsuits in state and federal court; providing general representation to assigned clients including the Georgia Department of Labor, the state’s public retirement systems, the State Personnel Board and the Veterans Services Board. Travel is occasionally required for this position. Teleworking is available.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Appears in state and federal courts to try cases and argue motions and appeals.
  • Conducts legal research and keeps abreast of recent legal developments.
  • Prepares pleadings, motions and briefs.
  • Prepares discovery requests and responses, including e-discovery.
  • Takes and defends depositions.
  • Provides general legal advice and/or representation to clients/agencies.
  • May be called upon to present training material on relevant subject matter to client agencies.
  • Attends continuing legal education seminars as required;
  • Travel, as required by the position (typically travel is limited).
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Assistant Attorney General | Regulated Industries and Professions | Office of the Attorney General | Georgia

Location: Atlanta
Salary: $65,000 minimum/commensurate with experience

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:Attorneys in this section provide legal advice and representation to the Office of Health Planning of the Department of Community Health, the Georgia Public Service Commission, the Access to Medical Cannabis Commission and the Insurance Commissioner, as well as representing the state in antitrust cases. For the Office of Health Planning and the Public Service Commission, attorneys represent the divisions of the agency before hearing officers and agency heads, and then defend the final agency decision on appeal. For the Access to Medical Cannabis Commission, attorneys advise the client on the implementation of the Hope Act, and defends its selection of licensees. While this section represents the Insurance Commissioner’s office in contested cases and rulemakings, the bulk of the work has related to the liquidation of insolvent insurance companies, which can involve bringing claims against parties that contributed to the insolvency of an insurance company as well as defending the Insurance Commissioner against claims the liquidation was mishandled. The antitrust work for this section generally involves federal/state or multistate litigation. The section also represents the Georgia Commission on Equal Opportunity, the Trauma Care Network Commission, the State Board of Workers’ Compensation, the Secretary of State’s Office in selected areas, the Commission on Women and the Subsequent Injury Trust Fund. Finally, the Section represents the state in data breach, Class Action Fairness Act and payday lending matters.

  • Participates in settlement negotiations.
  • Prepares discovery requests and responses.
  • Provides legal advice and/or representation to clients/agencies; drafts memoranda of advice.
  • Conducts research on pertinent legal issues; keeps abreast of recent legal developments.
  • Participates in multistate working groups.
  • Reviews sign-on opportunities for letters, comments and briefs.
  • Drafts formal opinions in response to legal questions.
  • Responds to inquiries from citizens, legislators, and judges.
  • Attends client, board, departmental and division meetings as required.
  • Attends continuing legal education seminars as required; makes presentations at same.
  • Travel, as required by the position (typically not much travel is required).
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Assistant Regional Counsel | Office of the General Counsel Region IV | Social Security Administration

Location: Sam Nunn Atlanta Federal Center in Atlanta, Georgia
Salary: $80,830 (GS 12 limited experience); $96,117 (GS-13 experienced)

The Office of the General Counsel generally hires attorneys with limited experience (GS 12) with a starting salary of $80,830 and above or experienced attorneys (GS-13) at a starting salary of $96,117 and above. The positions are located in the Sam Nunn Atlanta Federal Center in Atlanta. All attorneys must be active members in good standing of the bar of any state, Washington, D.C. or U.S. Territory. Applicants should possess outstanding academic qualifications such as experience on Law Review or an equivalent legal journal, a Moot Court Team and academic standing in the top third of their law school class. Significant litigation and/or judicial clerkship experience is desirable. Applicants should also be able to demonstrate excellent research and writing skills.  

Assistant regional counsel represent the Social Security Administration when decisions issued by the agency are subject to judicial review in federal court. Assistant regional counsel also provide guidance to and represent the agency in employment litigation before the EEOC, MSPB and labor arbitrators. There are also opportunities for attorneys to handle a variety of other legal issues including privacy and disclosure, civil rights and federal tort claims.
